Applications are now open for the 2027-2028 Pediatric Palliative Care Research Fellowship offered by the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Division at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio, USA. APCA is sharing this opportunity with our network of clinicians and researchers committed to improving care for children with serious illness and their families.
About the fellowship
The one-year, research-focused programme aims to advance evidence-based care for children with serious illness and to develop the next generation of clinician-scholars in paediatric hospice and palliative medicine. Paediatric palliative care remains relatively underdeveloped as a field of research, and the fellowship is designed to help close that gap by preparing clinician-investigators who can generate the evidence the specialty needs.
Fellows lead an original research project and gain experience in:
- Study design, research ethics and regulatory processes
- Qualitative and quantitative methods and data analysis
- Manuscript preparation and peer-reviewed publication
- Presenting findings at national meetings
- Leadership and academic career development
What the fellowship offers
- Protected research time with individualised, structured mentorship
- Research environment: participation in the scholarly activities of the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute and a well-established interdisciplinary palliative care team
- Further study: opportunities for graduate or certificate coursework, with graduate degree support
- Clinical integration: limited clinical service to help fellows maintain their clinical skills

Who can apply
The fellowship begins on 1 July each year and is open to physicians at any career stage who are completing an ACGME-accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship, or who are board-certified. Questions about visa sponsorship should be directed to the programme.
